Protecting EV charging stations from vandalism and cable theft

ChargePoint Express Plus charging station

Copper theft and vandalism have become a real cost of owning EV charging equipment, and it is a subject we raise with every property owner before a station goes in the ground. ChargePoint® builds hardware and software specifically to reduce that risk, and this page lays out what is available today and what we recommend you specify from the start.

Why cable theft and vandalism matter

A cut charging cable is not a cosmetic problem. The station goes offline until a technician arrives, which can mean days without a working port at a property that residents, employees or fleet drivers depend on. Repair or replacement carries a real cost, and it usually falls outside routine maintenance budgets because it was not planned for. There is also a trust cost that is easy to underestimate: a driver who pulls up to a broken station once tends to stop trusting the location altogether, and that reputation is hard to win back. For multifamily properties and workplaces trying to make charging a selling point, a station that is frequently down works against the goal it was installed to serve.

What ChargePoint® offers today

ChargePoint Protect alarm unit that detects cable cutting in real time

ChargePoint now offers cut-resistant cables on new CP6000 and Express Plus stations, and retrofit kits are available for stations already in the field, so an earlier deployment is not locked out of the improvement. ChargePoint Protect adds an alarm that detects cable cutting as it happens and alerts the station owner by text or email in real time, rather than waiting for a driver complaint to surface the problem. Omni Port, ChargePoint's universal connector, means any electric vehicle can use any space, which reduces the incentive to target a specific cable type and keeps the whole lot usable regardless of which ports are affected. On the service side, ChargePoint Assure and Safeguard Care add ongoing monitoring, scheduled maintenance and on-site inspection, so issues are more often caught before they become a driver-facing outage.

What EnFin recommends when specifying a site

ChargePoint cable protection hardware installed on a charging station

When we scope a charging deployment, we recommend ordering cut-resistant cables and ChargePoint Protect as part of the original order rather than adding them later, since building the protection in from day one is simpler and usually more cost-effective than a retrofit. For properties with stations already installed, a retrofit kit is worth budgeting for, particularly at sites that have already experienced an incident or sit in a location with limited nighttime visibility. We also encourage owners to weigh Assure or Safeguard Care coverage against the cost of an unplanned service call, especially at unattended locations. Installation, engineering and commissioning are performed by manufacturer-certified installers, the client's own team, or a qualified third party, under a separate contract with the buyer; EnFin and Continuity Power Group supply and coordinate and we do not install. We supply ChargePoint commercial stations, CPF50 and above; a standard home charger is best purchased through retail.
